What you'll study

The programme combines theoretical modules, practical clinical skills and substantial supervised practice placements. Early modules develop foundations in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, communication, professional practice and the principles of safe person‑centred care. You will then progress to modules that focus on acute and long‑term conditions commonly seen in adult services, complex care needs, comorbidity management, medicines management, and care for older adults.

Across all years there is an emphasis on evidence‑based practice, health promotion, ethics and law, mental health considerations in adult nursing, and interprofessional working. Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, simulated clinical skills sessions in skills labs, case‑based learning and reflection on practice. Research methods and a final-year project or practice‑focused dissertation support development of appraisal skills and clinical leadership.

Clinical practice is integrated throughout the degree via repeated placements in a range of settings such as acute hospital wards, community nursing teams, rehabilitation services and care homes. Placement experiences increase in complexity and responsibility as you progress, and are assessed against professional standards required for registration.

Entry requirements

• Academic qualifications: typical offers require successful completion of a recognised secondary school or post‑secondary qualification (for example A‑levels, BTEC or equivalent). Exact entry grades and accepted qualifications are set by the university and should be checked on the course page.
• GCSEs: pass level in English language and mathematics (or recognised equivalent) is normally required.

On successful completion you will be eligible to apply for registration with the professional nursing regulator for adult nursing in the UK, enabling you to work as a qualified staff nurse across the NHS, independent and voluntary sectors. Typical graduate roles include staff nurse positions in acute hospitals, community nursing, district nursing, specialist clinics, rehabilitation units and care home services.

Career progression pathways include clinical specialisation (for example oncology, critical care, respiratory or cardiac nursing), advanced practice roles such as nurse practitioner, practice education and clinical leadership or management. Graduates can also pursue postgraduate study in areas such as advanced clinical practice, public health, healthcare leadership or research, opening opportunities in education, policy and academic research. The skills gained are also transferable to roles in health promotion, case management and international nursing.
