What you'll study

This program provides a mix of foundational IT theory and hands-on technical practice. Early subjects typically cover programming fundamentals, discrete mathematics and computer systems, while core units address software development, relational databases, operating systems and networking. As you progress you study more specialised topics such as web and mobile development, cybersecurity principles, cloud computing, data analytics and machine learning foundations.

A significant feature of the degree is applied practice: common components include team-based software engineering projects, a professional practice or industry placement unit, and a final year capstone or major project that lets you develop a substantial piece of work to demonstrate to employers. Electives and streams allow you to focus your studies in areas such as software engineering, networking and security, or data analytics.

Entry requirements

Admission is usually based on successful completion of an Australian senior secondary qualification (or recognised international equivalent) with an appropriate academic profile. Applicants who hold a related diploma, previous tertiary study, or substantial relevant work experience may be eligible for admission or credit toward the degree under recognition of prior learning policies.

Domestic applicants should check state-based senior secondary qualification equivalents. International applicants must hold a recognised secondary or post-secondary qualification and demonstrate English language proficiency at the university's required level through an accepted test or prior study in English.

The university also considers mature-age applicants and those with vocational training; in some cases bridging units or enabling courses are offered to prepare students for degree-level study.
