What you'll study

This pathway builds on existing clinical experience and covers the advanced knowledge and skills required for registration as a Registered Nurse. Study areas typically include advanced anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology for nurses, health assessment, complex clinical decision-making, evidence-based practice, professional and legal issues in nursing, acute and chronic disease management, mental health nursing, maternal and child health, and community and primary health care.

The program combines theoretical coursework with supervised clinical practice. You will undertake simulated clinical learning in university facilities and multiple clinical placements across hospital, community, aged care and mental health settings to consolidate practical skills and professional behaviours. A capstone or transition-to-practice subject commonly integrates clinical leadership, care coordination and reflective practice to prepare you for the responsibilities of a Registered Nurse.

Entry requirements

Entry is intended for qualified Enrolled Nurses. Typical entry requirements include current registration or enrolment as an Enrolled Nurse with the national/state nursing regulator and evidence of prior study such as a Diploma of Nursing or equivalent recognised credential. Applicants are also expected to demonstrate relevant clinical experience and meet university English language proficiency standards. CQU may assess applications for advanced standing or credit based on prior formal study and clinical experience.

Other standard admission conditions may include a satisfactory criminal history check and up-to-date immunisation and health screening required for clinical placements.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to practise as Registered Nurses across a wide range of settings. Common career destinations include acute care in public and private hospitals, community and primary health services, aged care and rehabilitation, mental health services, paediatric and maternal health, and public health programs. The degree also opens pathways into clinical leadership, nurse education, clinical coordination and postgraduate study such as specialised master’s programs or clinical nurse specialist training.

Because the program recognises prior clinical experience, many students find the course supports a relatively smooth transition into expanded clinical responsibilities and career progression within health services.
