What you'll study

This degree builds subject expertise in two secondary teaching areas (a major and a minor) alongside core professional studies in pedagogy and classroom practice. Typical topics include curriculum design and assessment, adolescent development and psychology, classroom and behaviour management, inclusive education and differentiation, Indigenous perspectives in Australian schools, educational research methods and the use of digital technologies for teaching and learning.

Subject-methods units focus on planning and delivering curriculum in your chosen learning areas (for example, Mathematics, English, Science, Humanities, Health & Physical Education, Languages, Technologies or Arts). The program includes scaffolded professional experience placements throughout the degree, beginning with short observational placements and progressing to extended practicum blocks in partner schools where you take on full classroom responsibilities under supervision.

Students also study professional roles and responsibilities, child protection and mandatory reporting, assessment and reporting to families, and ways to work with diverse learners, including students with disability and students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have completed secondary school at a level equivalent to Australian Year 12 or hold an approved tertiary qualification. CQU offers pathways for mature-age applicants and those with prior vocational or higher education study. Selection also considers academic background in your intended teaching areas.

All applicants must meet the university's English language proficiency requirements; international applicants should check CQU's published criteria for acceptable tests and scores. Successful entry into the professional teaching program is also conditional on meeting regulatory and placement requirements such as a current working with children/background check, immunisation requirements and any mandatory first-aid or health clearances set by placement partners.

Career prospects

Graduates are qualified to seek registration as a secondary school teacher and typically work in government and non-government secondary schools. Common roles include classroom teacher in your specialist subjects, heads of department, curriculum coordinator, and special-interest positions such as Indigenous education officer, student welfare coordinator or literacy/numeracy specialist.

With experience or further study, graduates may move into school leadership, curriculum development, teacher education, education policy, or roles in education-focused NGOs and industry training organisations. The degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate study in specialised areas such as special education, educational leadership or counselling.
