What you'll study

The program is structured to deliver a strong foundation in engineering fundamentals alongside core information technology disciplines. Early years concentrate on mathematics, physics, programming and engineering principles. Later years build specialised knowledge in control and instrumentation and applied IT.

  • Engineering and control modules: engineering mathematics, circuits and electronics, dynamics and materials, sensors and transducers, control theory, process control and automation, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), industrial networks and SCADA systems, embedded systems and mechatronics, instrumentation design and calibration.
  • Information technology modules: programming and software development, object-oriented design, databases, computer networks, operating systems, cybersecurity fundamentals, web and mobile development, data analytics and cloud computing.
  • Integration and professional practice: systems engineering and integration, human–machine interfaces, project management, engineering ethics and professional practice, law and IP for engineers/IT professionals.
  • Capstone and practical experience: an Honours-level research or design project in control and instrumentation, an IT project or integrated industry capstone, and opportunities for work-integrated learning, laboratory-based training with industrial equipment and simulation tools.

Entry requirements

Applicants are typically expected to have completed secondary education equivalent to the Australian Year 12 with satisfactory results in mathematics (often intermediate or advanced) and a physical science such as physics or chemistry. Alternative entry pathways include recognised diploma qualifications, vocational qualifications plus relevant work experience, and accredited prior learning.

  • Academic: secondary school completion with demonstrated proficiency in mathematics; higher-level maths is an advantage for engineering subjects.
  • Alternative pathways: university or TAFE diplomas, foundation programs, or relevant work experience may be accepted for mature-age applicants.
