What you'll study

This programme provides a blend of theoretical study, skills-based simulation and supervised clinical practice to prepare graduates for autonomous midwifery practice. Core study areas typically include advanced midwifery practice, antenatal care, intrapartum care and labour management, postpartum and newborn care, perinatal mental health, pharmacology for midwives, and contemporary issues in maternity care such as informed consent, ethical practice and cultural safety.

Students also undertake modules in research methods and a capstone or major project that develops skills in evidence appraisal and application to improve care. The course emphasises continuity of care models, health promotion, multidisciplinary teamwork, care of women with complex needs, and maternal–newborn physiology. Learning methods commonly include blended online study, face-to-face simulation in clinical skills labs, tutorials and extended clinical placements across hospital and community settings.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold a recognised bachelor degree in nursing or a closely related health discipline, or equivalent qualifications deemed appropriate by the university. Candidates must be eligible for or hold current registration to practise as a nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) where applicable; some applicants from other health professions may be considered if they meet the programme’s clinical and academic prerequisites.

Selection typically takes into account academic record, relevant clinical experience in health care, a statement of purpose and referees. Successful applicants must also satisfy mandatory pre-placement requirements such as police checks, immunisation and health screening and any clinical clearance processes. International students must meet Central Queensland University’s English language and visa requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to register and practise as midwives and to work across a range of settings including public and private hospitals, community-based midwifery services, birth centres and remote or regional health services. Career pathways include clinically focused roles (primary midwife, team leader), continuity of care caseload models, community maternal and child health, specialised roles in perinatal mental health or neonatal care, and positions in policy, management and education.

With postgraduate training and experience, midwives may progress to roles in clinical education, quality and safety, research and advanced practice or pursue further study at doctoral level.
