What you'll study

The PhD is a primarily research-led programme that culminates in an original thesis and viva. Students undertake a sustained programme of independent research under the guidance of one or more academic supervisors. Typical research topics include exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control, sport and exercise psychology, performance analysis, public health and applied intervention studies.

Alongside the thesis, candidates normally take part in a structured programme of research training. This commonly covers advanced research methods, experimental design, statistical analysis and specialist techniques relevant to the project (for example motion capture, force measurement, metabolic and cardiorespiratory assessment, or psychometric methods). Regular research seminars, journal clubs and progress reviews form part of the training environment.

Depending on the project, students may also gain experience in teaching, grant writing and knowledge exchange, and are expected to disseminate findings through conferences and peer‑reviewed publications.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a relevant Master's degree with a research component (for example MSc in Sport and Exercise Sciences, Human Movement, Applied Physiology, Biomechanics, Exercise Psychology or a closely related discipline) or an undergraduate degree with substantial research experience. A strong academic record and demonstrable research potential are required.

Applications should include a clear research proposal outlining the question, proposed methods and rationale, together with an academic CV, transcripts and the names of academic referees. Candidates without a directly related Master's but with substantial relevant professional or research experience may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis.

Because the programme is research intensive, applicants must show evidence of quantitative and/or qualitative research skills appropriate to the proposed project. International applicants must meet the university's English language requirements.
