What you'll study

The MPhil/PhD is a research-focused programme in which you design and complete an original thesis under the guidance of supervisors from Warwick’s Centre for Applied Linguistics and related departments. Research topics commonly include second language acquisition, classroom interaction, teacher education, testing and assessment, corpus-based approaches to language teaching, multilingualism, discourse analysis, materials development, language policy and technology-enhanced language learning. You will undertake a period of probation during which you refine your research question, complete a literature review and, where relevant, pilot empirical work. Training in research methods and research ethics is provided through Warwick’s graduate training provision and local seminar programmes; students commonly engage with quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods approaches as appropriate to their projects.

Students take part in regular research seminars, reading groups and doctoral workshops, and are expected to present work-in-progress at internal and external events. The final output is a doctoral thesis that makes a substantial and original contribution to the study of English language teaching and applied linguistics.

Entry requirements

Applicants typically need a good master’s degree (or equivalent) in applied linguistics, TESOL, education, linguistics or a closely related subject, and evidence of research training or potential. You should submit a research proposal that outlines a clear research question, proposed methods and a rationale for the project, together with a CV, academic transcripts and references. Candidates whose first language is not English will be asked to demonstrate English proficiency in line with university regulations; additional evidence of prior research experience, publications or relevant professional experience in language teaching or assessment strengthens an application. All applicants will be assessed for fit with available supervisory expertise and the Centre’s research priorities.
