What you'll study

Research projects span fundamental laboratory work, experimental medicine, clinical translation and population-based studies. Current thematic areas include:

• Device development
• Cardiomyopathies and arrhythmias
• Ischaemic preconditioning
• Cardiovascular imaging and regenerative therapies
• Cardiovascular genetics, epidemiology and preventative medicine

Students join multidisciplinary research environments with links to engineering, imaging, anatomy, nanotechnology, chemistry and genetics. Supervision is provided by world-leading academics and a multidisciplinary supervisory panel; students also have opportunities to present at scientific meetings and participate in skills workshops.

Entry requirements

The programme requires at minimum an upper second-class UK Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate subject or a medical degree, or an overseas qualification of equivalent standard, or a recognised taught Master’s degree. English language requirements apply; international applicants should consult UCL guidance for country-specific equivalencies. Applicants should submit applications at least three months before the intended start date.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for research careers in academia, clinical academic pathways and industry. Non-clinical graduates commonly move to postdoctoral positions or research fellowships nationally or internationally; clinical graduates may continue clinical and research training towards academic clinical roles. The programme highlights networking through supervisors’ national and international collaborations and attendance at conferences.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Projects are available to self-funding students and to candidates who secure sponsorship. UCL ICS notes that students who obtain sponsorship may be supported for three to four years; prospective applicants should investigate institute and external funding opportunities and contact Graduate Admissions for further advice.
