What you'll study

This degree combines core computer science skills with specialist cyber security topics. You will study fundamentals such as computer networks, operating systems, programming and databases before progressing to dedicated security modules. Typical subjects include cryptography, network security, secure software development, penetration testing and vulnerability assessment, digital forensics, malware analysis, cloud and mobile security, incident response and security risk management. Teaching mixes lectures, seminars and practical laboratory sessions using industry-standard tools, with coursework that often includes hands-on exercises, simulated attacks and defensive projects.

The programme usually culminates in a substantial individual project or dissertation focused on a real-world security problem, and many routes offer an optional placement/sandwich year or industry project collaboration to gain workplace experience. Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have qualifications in mathematics and/or computing at A level or equivalent, together with a set of general secondary school qualifications or a recognised vocational qualification in a related subject. Typical offers for standard entry reflect good performance across three A-levels or an equivalent BTEC/European or international qualification, and relevant foundation-year routes or accredited access qualifications are considered for those without traditional qualifications.

Mature applicants with relevant work experience in IT or security are welcomed and assessed on their overall profile. All applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate proficiency in English through an approved test or accepted alternative evidence.

Career prospects

Common entry-level positions include security analyst, SOC (security operations centre) analyst, penetration tester/ethical hacker, junior digital forensics examiner, incident responder and security consultant. With experience, graduates progress to senior technical roles such as security architect, threat intelligence analyst, malware analyst or security manager, and into specialist consultancy, risk and compliance, or leadership roles in industry, finance, telecoms, government and defence.
