What you'll study

This degree combines core biological science with clinical and laboratory applications. Early years build a foundation in cell biology, human physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology, together with microbiology and immunology. You will develop practical skills in laboratory techniques such as microscopy, aseptic technique, molecular assays (PCR, gel electrophoresis), basic histology and blood‑based analyses.

Later stages introduce specialist clinical subjects including clinical biochemistry, haematology, clinical microbiology, transfusion science and genetics. Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, laboratory practicals and small‑group tutorials. Assessment typically blends practical reports, written exams, coursework and presentations. A substantive final‑year research project or dissertation gives experience of experimental design, data analysis and scientific communication.

Entry requirements

Typical applicants have a strong science background. Successful candidates usually hold secondary qualifications with good grades in Biology and/or Chemistry; other science subjects such as Physics or Mathematics are also advantageous. City considers a range of qualifications, including A‑levels, BTEC National Diplomas, Access to HE diplomas and international equivalents. Applicants with substantial relevant laboratory experience or prior higher education study are also considered.

GCSEs or equivalent in English and Mathematics are commonly expected. Selection is based on academic record, personal statement and references; some applicants may be invited for interview. International students should demonstrate English language proficiency to the level required by the university.
