What you'll study

This three-year programme covers the fundamental principles of civil engineering together with practical design, project work and industry-relevant computing skills.   • Year 1: mathematical methods for engineers, mechanics of solids, materials and construction technology, engineering surveying and measurement, introduction to computing and CAD, engineering practice and laboratory work.
  • Year 2: structural analysis and reinforced concrete design, steel design, geotechnical engineering, fluid mechanics and hydraulics, soil mechanics, construction management and health & safety, numerical methods and engineering software (e.g. MATLAB, CAD/BIM tools).
  • Year 3: advanced structural design, transportation and infrastructure engineering, water and environmental engineering, integrated design project or dissertation, professional and ethical aspects of engineering, plus option modules that may include sustainable design, earthquake-resistant structures or advanced geotechnics.

Teaching combines lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, computer workshops and site visits. The programme emphasises practical design projects and group work to develop technical competence and transferable skills such as communication, project management and teamwork.
