The BEng Civil Engineering at Swansea University is a three-year undergraduate degree that teaches the technical, design and project-management skills needed to plan, design and maintain infrastructure. What you'll study

This programme builds a foundation in core engineering science before moving on to applied civil engineering subjects. Teaching combines lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, computing workshops and project work, including team design projects and site visits.

  • Year 1: fundamentals of engineering mathematics, mechanics and materials; introduction to structural and fluid mechanics; surveying and CAD; practical laboratory skills and computing for engineers.
  • Year 2: structural analysis and design principles, geotechnical engineering and soil mechanics, hydraulics and environmental engineering, construction materials and methods, and modules on professional practice and health & safety.
  • Year 3: advanced structural and geotechnical design, transport engineering, water and environmental systems, project management and a substantial individual or group design project integrating technical, economic and sustainability considerations.
  • Throughout the course you will develop transferable skills in engineering computation, technical communication, CAD and BIM tools, experimental testing and problem-solving. Opportunities exist to undertake industrial placements or professional development modules where available.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a strong background in mathematics and at least one other science or engineering subject at Level 3 (for example A-level, BTEC or equivalent). Typical applicants hold mathematics A-level (or equivalent) plus complementary science or engineering qualifications. Successful candidates will also demonstrate practical ability and an aptitude for technical design and problem-solving.

International students should hold equivalent academic qualifications and meet the University's English language requirements.
