This professionally focused master’s combines theoretical foundations with applied practice. Core study areas include counselling theories and evidence-based therapeutic approaches (for example cognitive–behavioural, person-centred and systemic therapies), assessment and formulation, research methods and evaluation, ethics and professional practice, and culturally responsive counselling practice. Specialist topics commonly offered cover trauma-informed interventions, grief and loss, child and adolescent counselling, group work and family interventions.

A key component of the programme is supervised clinical practice: students complete structured placement(s) in community or clinical settings under experienced supervisors to consolidate assessment, intervention and reflective practice. The course also includes training in professional skills such as case management, client documentation, referral pathways and inter-professional collaboration. Students are assessed through a mix of written assignments, case studies, simulated sessions and supervised practicum performance.

Entry requirements

Suitable applicants typically hold a recognised undergraduate degree. Applicants with a degree in psychology, social work, human services, education or a related discipline may be directly eligible. Those with an unrelated bachelor degree but with substantial relevant professional experience or a recognised graduate diploma in counselling may also be considered.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate interpersonal suitability for clinical work, and may need to provide a personal statement and referees who can speak to their professional aptitude. International applicants must meet English language proficiency requirements. Where required by placement providers, students must obtain a police check and meet any health or immunisation checks before commencing practicum components.
