What you'll study

This programme builds from core principles to applied economics. In early stages you will cover microeconomics, macroeconomics and quantitative methods to develop a firm analytical base. As you progress, you will study modules in econometrics, data analysis for economics, public policy, international trade, and financial and behavioural economics.

• Core modules: introductory microeconomics and macroeconomics, quantitative methods, and statistics for economists.
• Intermediate modules: applied econometrics, modelling and forecasting, and cost–benefit and policy analysis.
• Optional/specialist modules: labour economics, environmental and resource economics, development economics, financial economics and behavioural economics.
• Skills development: training in data-handling and software commonly used by economists (for example spreadsheet modelling, statistical packages and data visualisation techniques).
• Final year project or dissertation: an independent research project under supervision that applies theory and empirical methods to a question of your choice.
• Placement and study abroad opportunities: many students can take an optional placement year in industry or public sector organisations, or choose a period of international study, to gain practical experience and enhance employability.

Entry requirements

Entry is typically offered to applicants who have completed secondary school qualifications equivalent to standard UK A-levels, Scottish Highers or recognised international qualifications. A background in mathematics or a quantitative subject is highly recommended because of the programme's emphasis on statistics and econometrics. Applicants presenting vocational qualifications such as BTEC are considered where they demonstrate appropriate subject knowledge and quantitative skills. Mature applicants and those with Access to Higher Education diplomas are also welcome, and admissions decisions may take relevant work or life experience into account.

All applicants whose first language is not English will need to provide evidence of English language proficiency at a level that enables successful participation in lectures, seminars and assessments.
