What you'll study

The programme builds a foundation in core economic theory and quantitative techniques before allowing increasing specialisation in later years. Early modules typically cover microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematics for economists and introductory statistics. As you progress you can expect modules in econometrics, applied data analysis, public economics, international trade and monetary economics.

Final-year study usually includes a dissertation or research project together with optional specialised modules such as development economics, behavioural economics, financial economics, labour economics and policy evaluation. The degree emphasises applied skills: you will use statistical software, work with real datasets, and engage in policy- and business-focused casework.

Programme structure is normally three years full-time, with an option to take a sandwich or placement year between years two and three to gain workplace experience. Assessment methods include exams, coursework, presentations, group projects and the independent dissertation.

Entry requirements

Oxford Brookes seeks applicants with evidence of strong numeracy and analytical ability. Typical offers are based on A-levels, BTEC, International Baccalaureate or equivalent qualifications; applicants are expected to have achieved good grades in relevant subjects. A-level Mathematics is highly recommended if available.
