This Bachelor programme combines core computer science with specialist modules in digital forensics, teaching the technical and investigative skills needed to collect, analyse and present digital evidence. It suits students who want a strong grounding in programming, systems and security together with practical training in forensic tools, investigative methodology and legal/ethical issues.
The degree covers a mix of foundational computer science topics and specialist digital forensics subjects. In early years you study programming, data structures and algorithms, computer architecture, operating systems, databases and networks to build a solid technical base. Core modules introduce principles of information security, cryptography and privacy alongside software engineering and web technologies.
Forensic-specific teaching typically includes modules on digital evidence acquisition, file system and storage forensics, mobile device and embedded system forensics, network forensics and malware analysis. You will also study investigative practice, courtroom procedures, report writing and the ethical and legal context of digital investigations.
Practical work is emphasised: you can expect hands-on laboratory sessions using industry-standard forensic tools, controlled examination of live and captured systems, capture-the-flag style challenges and supervised individual and group projects. A substantial final-year project gives you the chance to research a forensic problem in depth, from methodology and tool development to evaluation and reporting.
Typical applicants will have completed secondary qualifications such as A-levels, Scottish Highers, Irish Leaving Certificate or an international equivalent, including good grades in mathematics and/or a science or technical subject. Many students enter with a combination of qualifications accepted for UK undergraduate entry; Keele also considers UCAS tariff points and equivalent qualifications.
Mature students and those with relevant vocational qualifications or computing experience are welcome; applications are assessed on the whole profile of qualifications and experience. If English is not your first language you will need to demonstrate proficiency through an accepted English language qualification.
As well as academic requirements, a strong personal statement outlining interest in computing and digital investigation and any practical experience (programming, cyber clubs, competitions) will support an application. Where offered, interviews or admissions tests may form part of the selection process for some applicants.
Graduates are well placed for careers across cybersecurity, law enforcement, private investigation and IT. Common roles include digital forensics analyst, incident responder, security consultant, malware researcher, forensic investigator for law enforcement or commercial forensic service providers, and roles in cyber threat intelligence.
The combination of software engineering, systems knowledge and forensic skills also opens pathways into software development, systems administration, cloud and network engineering, technical support, and further study at postgraduate level or professional certification in security and forensics.
Students are encouraged to undertake placements, internships or industry projects to build practical experience and professional networks; these placements often lead to graduate roles.
