What you'll study

This joint honours degree brings together core topics in education with the study of English language and literature. You will sample both disciplines across historical periods and theoretical approaches while developing practical skills in communication, research and reflection.

• Core education topics: foundations of education and schooling, child and adolescent development, sociological and philosophical perspectives on education, inclusive practice, equality and diversity in learning, and research methods for education.
• English subject areas: close reading and textual analysis, English literature from medieval to modern periods, contemporary fiction and poetry, language study, and options such as creative writing, drama, and children’s literature.
• Practical and professional learning: short school-based placements, classroom observation, lesson evaluation, and opportunities for longer placements or community-based projects in later stages of the degree.
• Independent study: a final-year dissertation or extended project that may combine education and English interests, or separate honours essays in each discipline.
• Assessment methods: a blend of essays, seminar presentations, portfolios, practical reports from placements, and research projects.

The programme is structured so you build subject knowledge and pedagogical understanding progressively: introductory modules in the early stage, discipline-specific options and research training in the middle years, and an opportunity for focused independent work and professional experience in the final year.

Entry requirements

Keele looks for applicants with a strong academic record and evidence of interest in both education and English. Typical applicants present a combination of qualifications such as A levels, the International Baccalaureate, Scottish Highers or equivalent vocational qualifications. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the university's English language requirement.

• GCSE-level passes in English and usually in maths are commonly expected or an equivalent demonstration of proficiency.
• Applicants should be prepared to provide a personal statement demonstrating relevant experience or motivation (for example, school or community work, reading and language-related activity), and a reference from a teacher or employer.
• Offers may vary with subject combinations and contextual factors; mature applicants and those with vocational or Access qualifications are considered on an individual basis.
• Successful applicants will need to complete safeguarding checks (such as a Disclosure and Barring Service check) and may be asked to undergo a health check for placement suitability.
