What you'll study

This combined degree blends applied public health practice with interdisciplinary global studies. You will study core public health subjects such as epidemiology, biostatistics, health promotion, environmental health and health systems, together with global studies topics including international development, global governance, human rights, cross-cultural communication and area studies.

The program typically includes:

• Applied public health modules – foundations of public health, disease prevention, health promotion planning and evaluation, epidemiology and data analysis, Indigenous and community health, and health policy and management.
• Global studies modules – theories of globalisation, development practice, international relations, migration and diaspora studies, human rights, and regional studies relevant to the Asia–Pacific and beyond.
• Research and professional practice – methods and statistics for practice, a capstone project or minor thesis, and professional placements or fieldwork to apply skills in community, clinical or international settings.
• Electives and interdisciplinary options – opportunities to take electives across ACU faculties such as social work, psychology, education, or languages to tailor the degree to specific interests.

Teaching methods combine lectures, seminars, case studies, laboratory or data workshops, and supervised professional placements. The degree emphasises applied skills: needs assessment, program design and evaluation, health communication, cultural competence and ethical practice in both local and international contexts.

Entry requirements

Applicants are typically admitted on the basis of secondary-school qualifications (such as an Australian Year 12 certificate) or recognised international equivalents. ACU considers ATAR or equivalent scores alongside other factors where applicable.

Mature-age applicants and those with relevant work, community or volunteering experience may be eligible through alternative entry pathways. Applicants may also be considered via recognised bridging or enabling programs.

All applicants whose prior study was not in English will need to demonstrate English language proficiency to meet university requirements; common evidence includes recognised English tests or completion of approved English-language study. Specific prerequisites or assumed knowledge are uncommon, but some campuses or units may recommend demonstrated numeracy or introductory biology/health knowledge.

• Public health officer or program coordinator in government health departments and local councils.

• Project officer or programme manager in international development agencies and humanitarian organisations.

Graduates can also pursue postgraduate study in public health, international development, social policy, or related professional fields to specialise further or move into leadership roles.
