What you'll study

The Honours year combines advanced coursework in social science theory and methods with an independent research project supervised by academic staff. Core study areas typically include contemporary social theory, qualitative and quantitative research methods, ethics in social research, and specialised topics aligned to your chosen discipline (for example sociology, criminology, social policy, community development or Indigenous studies).

Students undertake a substantial research thesis under supervision, developing skills in literature review, research design, data collection and analysis, and academic writing. Elective or specialist seminars allow you to deepen knowledge in areas such as youth studies, regional and rural social issues, justice and corrections, public policy, or digital society, depending on staff expertise and available offerings.

Entry requirements

Admission is normally for candidates who have completed a relevant bachelor’s degree in arts or social sciences. Applicants are generally expected to demonstrate strong academic performance in their undergraduate studies, typically the equivalent of an upper‑second class level or higher, or otherwise provide evidence of appropriate professional experience and research potential.

Application usually requires an academic transcript, a statement of research interest or short proposal, and the names of potential supervisors or referees.
