What you'll study

This master’s balances taught coursework with original research. Typical taught modules introduce advanced theory and methods relevant to Phrftt1, including specialised topics, research design, and methodological tools used in the discipline. You will normally take a mix of compulsory core modules that establish the theoretical and methodological foundations, and optional modules that allow you to focus on particular applications or contexts.

• Core theory and concepts: advanced frameworks and debates that underpin the field.
• Research methods: qualitative and/or quantitative techniques, data analysis, and project design tailored to Phrftt1 research.
• Specialist option modules: topics that reflect staff expertise and current regional or international priorities.
• Research project / dissertation: an independently conducted piece of supervised research leading to a substantive written thesis or equivalent practical project.

Assessment typically combines essays, applied assignments or portfolios, presentations and the final dissertation. Students are supported by academic supervision and are encouraged to disseminate findings through seminars and conferences.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, often with a minimum second-class honours or equivalent. Candidates whose first degree is in a different but related area may be considered if they can demonstrate appropriate background knowledge or relevant professional experience.

• Academic qualifications: an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject or equivalent professional qualification.
• Research potential: evidence of ability to undertake independent study, often demonstrated through a prior research project, dissertation or professional practice.
• Language proficiency: candidates whose first language is not English will need to meet the University of Malta’s English language requirements.
• Supporting materials: application usually requires transcripts, a personal statement outlining research interests, and references. In some cases you may be asked to attend an interview or provide a research proposal.
