What you'll study

This three-year Bachelor programme develops core competences in English linguistics, literature and applied language practice. Teaching balances theoretical modules with practical workshops and a period of individual research.

• Core linguistics: phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics.
• Applied and social linguistics: sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, corpus linguistics and language variation.
• Literature and cultural studies: surveys of British and American literature, literary analysis, cultural history and contemporary cultural studies.
• Language teaching and methodology: principles of TESOL, lesson planning, classroom practice and assessment, including practical teaching placements.
• Translation and intercultural communication: translation theory and practice, text analysis, specialised translation (e.g. technical, legal, media) and interpreting basics.
• Research methods and academic skills: academic writing, research methods, critical thinking and preparation for the bachelor thesis.
• Electives and practical experience: elective modules such as English for specific purposes, media English, or CLIL; language laboratory work; and an option to undertake an internship or Erasmus mobility semester.

The programme typically concludes with an independent bachelor thesis and an oral defence. Courses are assessed by a mix of coursework, presentations, written exams and practical assessments.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a recognised secondary school leaving certificate or equivalent. For applicants whose previous education was not conducted in English, proof of English language competence at least at B2 level (CEFR) is usually required; higher levels (C1) are an advantage for competitive applicants. The admissions process commonly includes an entrance assessment in English—covering reading, writing and spoken proficiency—or an interview.

International applicants should submit certified copies of their qualifications and any required translations, and check the university’s international admissions guidance for document attestation and visa-related information.
