What you'll study

The program totals 60 semester credit hours and trains students in eight core counselor education areas:

• Professional counseling orientation and ethical practice
• Social and cultural diversity
• Human growth and development
• Career development
• Counseling and helping relationships
• Group counseling and group work
• Assessment and testing
• Research and program evaluation

Program structure: 14 core classes (42 credits), practicum and internship courses (9 credits) and electives (9 credits). A minimum of 100 practicum hours and 600 internship hours are required; the program can accommodate states that require more than 600 hours. Students should expect to spend about nine hours per week on each course, and approximately 20 hours per week onsite at a local clinical setting once practicum and internships begin. Residencies give students small-group practice opportunities with faculty feedback; students rotate between counselor, client and observer roles.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects strong demand for mental health counselors; counseling is identified as a faster‑growing mental health profession. Graduates will have knowledge, skills and dispositions to function as professional clinical mental health counselors, prepared for employment across a range of settings and to meet certification and state licensure standards through completion of a CACREP program.

Scholarships & funding angle

New master’s applicants may be eligible for the President’s Merit Scholarship, awarded based on prior academic performance (minimum 3.40 GPA) and work/life experience; the award is $6,000 distributed over the first two academic years and requires full-time enrollment and satisfactory academic progress. Students are responsible for travel, overnight accommodations and dinner costs associated with the residencies.
