Research students develop an original line of inquiry within one of the two streams. Work in Space and Society focuses on space syntax theories and methods to link spatial patterns with social and economic performance of buildings and urban areas. Architectural Computation projects concentrate on developing and applying technologies—computational generative methods, analytical and machine learning approaches, and extended-reality experiences—to questions of design, interaction and material behaviour. Training is multidisciplinary, drawing on architecture, urban studies, social sciences, computer science and engineering, and is supported by seminars, lectures, workshops and access to advanced digital fabrication and research facilities.
Applicants normally need an upper second-class (2:1) UK Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree, or an overseas equivalent, in a relevant subject. Exceptional applicants with substantial research or professional experience may be considered without a Master’s. Candidates who hold a lower second-class (2:2) UK Bachelor’s degree must have a relevant Master’s to be eligible. A strong, convincing research proposal is critical to a successful application.
