What you'll study

The undergraduate foundation focuses on either psychological theory and research (Psychology, pre-counseling) or family systems and relational dynamics (Human Development and Family Science, pre-counseling). Graduate coursework builds counseling skills, evidence-based practice, assessment, and professional knowledge for diverse settings. Students engage in experiential learning via internships and field placements and may participate in research and assessment activities. As part of undergraduate requirements, students must complete a three-credit internship (INTE 391) before beginning graduate-level counseling courses.

Entry requirements

Incoming first-year applicants who meet Messiah University’s undergraduate admission criteria are eligible to enter the accelerated pathway. Current Messiah students may be considered if they can meet the accelerated timeline. Progression into the M.A. requires submission of a graduate application in semester 5, an interview, a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (students below 3.0 may be considered for conditional admission per graduate policies), and a professional or academic reference. Students will identify their desired counseling specialization when applying and will have informal check-ins with the graduate program during the first two years to confirm readiness.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to meet educational requirements for professional credentials such as Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or school counseling certification (state requirements vary). Typical employment settings named by the program include schools, mental health clinics, community agencies, hospitals, private practice, marriage and family counseling centers, substance use and behavioral health programs, and residential or youth services.

Messiah reports that 100% of first-year students receive financial aid; students in the accelerated pathway should consult the university’s financial aid office and the Career and Professional Development Center for guidance on funding, assistantships, and career-related support.
