What you'll study

The curriculum is structured to build competence in substantive and methodological domains. Core elements include:

• Theories of learning and human development: courses that survey contemporary frameworks from cognitive, social, cultural and lifespan perspectives and their implications for instruction and assessment.
• Advanced research methods: quantitative methods (including multilevel modelling and longitudinal analysis), qualitative approaches (ethnography, case study, narrative) and mixed-methods design, plus practicum experiences in data collection and analysis.
• Policy, leadership and organisational studies: examination of education policy formation, institutional change, leadership theory and governance across K–12, higher education and nonformal settings.
• Curriculum, instruction and assessment: study of curriculum design, formative and summative assessment practices, and approaches to equitable teaching for diverse learners.
• Specialised seminars and electives: topical seminars that reflect faculty expertise—examples include equity and social justice in education, learning sciences and technology-enhanced learning, comparative and international education, and health-related education research.

Throughout the programme students participate in research teams, present at seminars and conferences, and complete a year-long dissertation that contributes original scholarship to the field.

Entry requirements

Admission is selective and typically requires a relevant postgraduate degree (master’s or equivalent) and demonstrated potential for advanced research. Successful applicants normally provide:

• Academic transcripts showing strong performance in prior degree(s).
• Research statement / personal statement describing research interests, scholarly goals and fit with programme faculty.
• Curriculum vitae detailing academic, research and professional experience.
• Letters of recommendation (usually two to three) from academic or professional referees who can speak to research potential.
• Writing sample or examples of previous research or publications, where available.
• Interview: shortlisted candidates are often invited to discuss research interests with faculty.

International applicants must also demonstrate English language proficiency in accordance with university requirements. Applicants without a master’s but with exceptional research experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis; prospective students should consult programme admissions guidance for specific documentation.
