The PhD curriculum combines advanced coursework, rigorous quantitative training and an independent research dissertation. Core themes include animal physiology and biochemistry, genetics and breeding, nutrition and feed management, reproductive physiology and assisted reproductive technologies, animal behaviour and welfare, and the ecological and production systems that affect animal agriculture.

Students take graduate-level seminars and methods courses in experimental design, statistics and contemporary laboratory techniques, and they typically complete a mix of elective courses that align with their research emphasis (for example, molecular genetics, rumen microbiology, meat science, or endocrinology). The programme requires successful completion of departmental qualifying and comprehensive exams, regular seminar presentations, and a defended doctoral dissertation based on original research.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a relevant master's degree in animal sciences or a closely related discipline, although exceptional candidates with a strong bachelor’s degree and research experience may be considered. Admission decisions are based on the applicant’s academic record, documented research experience, letters of recommendation, a statement of research interests and career goals, and a curriculum vitae. International applicants must meet the university’s English language proficiency requirements.
