Prairie View A&M University Announces Presidential Scholarship Program to Support Students Amid Economic Recession

Prairie View, TX – In response to the ongoing economic recession that has strained many students’ financial resources, Prairie View A&M University is proud to announce the continuation of its Presidential Scholarship Program. This initiative is designed to provide much-needed financial assistance to both prospective and current students, helping to alleviate the burden of educational expenses in these challenging times. The scholarships honor distinguished leaders who have made significant contributions to the university and the surrounding community.

Prairie View A&M University is a public historically black university located in Prairie View, Texas. Established in 1876, it is the second-oldest public institution of higher education in the state of Texas. Scholarship Opportunities:

  • L.C. Anderson Scholarship: Named after Principal L.C. Anderson, who led Prairie View A&M from 1885 to 1897. This scholarship supports Texas residents classified as freshmen, offering up to $2,000 per academic year. Eligibility requires a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, full-time enrollment, and demonstrated financial need.
  • Edward L. Blackshear Scholarship: Honoring Principal Edward L. Blackshear, who served from 1897 to 1915, this scholarship is available to sophomores with 30-59 credit hours. Eligible students may receive up to $2,000 per academic year, provided they maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher and meet financial need criteria.
  • J.G. Osborne Scholarship: Named after Principal J.G. Osborne, who served from 1918 to 1925, this scholarship is intended for juniors with 60-89 credit hours. Students can receive up to $2,000 per academic year, contingent upon maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or greater and demonstrating financial need.
  • Alvin I. Thomas Scholarship: This scholarship commemorates Dr. Alvin I. Thomas, Prairie View A&M’s third president. It is available to seniors with 90+ credit hours, offering up to $1,000 per academic year. Eligible students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher and demonstrate financial need.
  • W.R. Banks Graduate Fellowship: In honor of Principal W.R. Banks, this fellowship supports graduate students with priority given to those with 54+ earned graduate credit hours. The fellowship provides up to $3,000 per academic year. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher and demonstrate financial need.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Presidential Scholarship Program at Prairie View A&M University, applicants must meet the following general eligibility criteria

  • Residency: Applicants must be Texas residents.
  • Enrollment Status: Applicants must be enrolled as full-time students, taking a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester (6 credit hours for graduate students).
  • Academic Standing:
  1. Freshmen: Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  2. Sophomores: Must have completed 30-59 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  3. Juniors: Must have completed 60-89 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  4. Seniors: Must have completed 90+ credit hours (not exceeding 150% of the required credit hours for their degree plan) with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  5. Graduate Students: Must have a cumulative and semester GPA of 3.0 or higher, with priority given to those who have completed over 54 graduate credit hours.
  • Financial Need: Applicants must demonstrate financial need, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Satisfactory Academic Progress: All applicants must maintain satisfactory academic progress throughout their time at the university, as defined by the university’s standards.
  • Application Submission: Applicants must have completed and submitted the general scholarship application by the specified deadline.
  • First-Come, First-Served Basis: Scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until all available funds are exhausted.

These criteria ensure that the scholarships are awarded to students who not only demonstrate academic promise but also face financial challenges in pursuing their education.


Application Procedure

Due to the increasing number of eligible applicants, funding for the Presidential Scholarship Program is limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested students must complete and submit the general scholarship application by the specified deadline and have a verified FAFSA on file to determine financial need.
