South Korea AKS Hanmun Fellowship 2026

The Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) is now accepting applications for the prestigious 2026 AKS Hanmun (Classical Chinese) Fellowship. This fellowship program is designed for international students passionate about Korean Studies who wish to enhance their proficiency in Classical Chinese (Hanmun) — a foundational skill for interpreting Korea’s historical and literary heritage.

As a leading institution promoting global Korean Studies, AKS provides an immersive academic and cultural environment for participants to develop advanced language and research skills.


Degree Level

  • Undergraduate
  • Master’s
  • Doctoral students

(including master’s or doctoral degree candidates currently enrolled at overseas universities)

Available Subjects

Participants can join one of the following:

  • Basic Course (13th Cohort): March 3 – June 19, 2026
  • Advanced Course (14th Cohort): September 1 – December 18, 2026

Lectures include:

  • Basic Course: Gyemongpyeon (The Book of Teaching Children), Mencius, Samguksagi (Chronicles of the Three States), Collected Commentaries of Elementary Learning, etc.
  • Advanced Course: Analects of Confucius, Mencius, Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms), and Prose Reading, among others.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the AKS Hanmun Fellowship 2026, applicants must:

  • Be an undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral student majoring in Korean Studies at an overseas university.
  • Demonstrate advanced Korean language proficiency, as all lectures are conducted in Korean.
  • For Advanced Course applicants, completion of a basic Hanmun (Hanja/Chinese Character) course is required.
  • Be non-Korean nationals and not graduates of the same level of study.

Application Procedure

Application Period

  • September 15, 2025 (10:00 KST) – October 17, 2025 (17:00 KST)

How to Apply

  • Visit the Academy of Korean Studies website to complete the online application form.
  • Prepare and upload all required documents (see below).
  • Shortlisted applicants will be contacted for a video interview between November 4–6, 2025.
  • Final results will be announced on November 12, 2025, via email.

Required Documents

  • Completed application form (available on AKS website)
  • Certificate of enrollment (or completion)
  • Letter of reference from academic advisor (explaining the applicant’s need to study Hanmun)
  • TOPIK score report (if available)

For Advanced Course applicants:

  • Transcript or certificate proving completion of a Hanmun course, or
  • AKS Hanmun Fellowship Certificate of Completion
  • Documents must be in Korean or English; otherwise, include a notarized translation.
