What you'll study

This one-year foundation programme combines core study skills with practical and technical modules to introduce the principles of construction, design and site practice. Typical topics include construction technology and materials, technical drawing and CAD, introductory building information modelling (BIM) concepts, surveying and measurement, maths and physics relevant to the built environment, and principles of sustainability and building performance.

Learning is delivered through a mix of lectures, studio and workshop sessions, IT-based design labs, site visits and project work. Assessments are primarily coursework-based and include practical assignments, drawing and modelling portfolios, written reports and presentations. A final integrated project helps students demonstrate readiness for progression to a range of built environment undergraduate degrees.

Entry requirements

Entry is aimed at recent school leavers and mature learners who need a preparatory year before undergraduate study. Typical entry requirements include passes in secondary school qualifications with specific strength in mathematics and a science or technical subject, plus evidence of literacy in English. Applicants who have completed some level 3 study but not met direct entry conditions for an undergraduate degree may also apply.

International applicants should demonstrate competence in English through an appropriate recognised qualification. Admissions decisions are made on a combination of academic record, references and, where relevant, a personal statement or interview. Candidates with relevant work experience or vocational qualifications are considered on their individual merits.

Career prospects

The foundation is specifically designed to enable progression to undergraduate degrees such as Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering and related programmes. Graduates who continue to a full BSc or Hons programme typically move into industry roles including site management, graduate surveying, design technician positions, BIM coordination, contract administration and building surveying. Others may choose to follow architectural or engineering pathways or continue into postgraduate specialisms.
