What you'll study

This apprenticeship covers the theory and practice of contemporary risk and safety management, aligned to employer-led occupational standards. Teaching blends applied classroom modules with employer-supervised workplace activities and a substantive workplace project that demonstrates competence against professional criteria.

• Risk management frameworks and governance — principles of risk identification, assessment, control and continuous improvement; integrating risk management into organisational decision-making.
• Safety management systems and assurance — design, implementation and auditing of safety management systems, performance measurement and leading/lagging indicators.
• Human factors and safety culture — behaviour, leadership, safety culture diagnostics, and interventions to influence behaviour and organisational culture.
• Incident investigation and learning — investigation techniques, root cause analysis, reporting, and using lessons learned to prevent recurrence.
• Legal, regulatory and compliance issues — relevant UK and international legislation, duties and enforcement relevant to industry sectors such as manufacturing, energy, transport and defence.
• Process safety and major hazard management — hazard identification methods, barrier management, and control of major accident risks where applicable to higher-hazard industries.
• Emergency preparedness and business resilience — planning, response, recovery and continuity planning to manage disruptive events.
• Data analysis and decision support — use of data, incident metrics and basic analytics to support risk-based decision-making.
• Professional practice and ethics — communication, stakeholder engagement, report writing and the ethical responsibilities of safety professionals.

Learning is typically delivered through short on-campus modules, distance learning, workplace coaching and mentored assessments. Assessment is by coursework, practical assignments, reflective portfolio and a final workplace project that evidences occupational competence.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally join via an employer who sponsors the apprenticeship. Typical entry expectations include relevant workplace experience in a safety, health or operational role and evidence of the ability to study at diploma level. Employers usually require a minimum level of English and numeracy; candidates without formal qualifications can be considered based on experience and an employer statement of support.

Where applicants hold prior qualifications (for example a related higher education qualification or professional certifications), these may be taken into account when agreeing an individual learning plan. Successful applicants will need an employer mentor and access to relevant workplace activities to demonstrate practical competence.
