What you'll study

This foundation degree combines core business theory with applied skills and work‑based learning. Modules typically cover the business environment and organisational behaviour, operational and project management, marketing principles and practice, introductory accounting and finance, and human resource management. You will also study business law and ethics, research and study skills, and entrepreneurship and small business development.

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, workshops, case studies and group work, with assessment through coursework, reports, presentations, projects and practical assignments. A key feature is a sustained applied project or work‑based placement which enables you to apply learning to real organisational problems and develop professional skills such as communication, problem solving and leadership.

Entry requirements

Entry to the foundation degree is normally based on a level 3 qualification such as A‑levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma or equivalent vocational qualifications, or a relevant CACHE/City & Guilds qualification. Applicants with appropriate work experience, professional qualifications or other prior learning are also considered. Typical offers will ask for passes in English and Maths at GCSE grade C/4 or an equivalent qualification; if you do not hold these, alternative evidence of numeracy and communication skills may be required.

There is usually scope for mature applicants and those returning to study; in such cases a combination of work experience and an interview or an assessed portfolio can be used to demonstrate suitability for the programme.

Career prospects

Graduates of the FdSc Applied Business Management commonly move into roles such as team leader, supervisor, operations coordinator, junior manager, sales or marketing assistant, and small business owner. The practical focus prepares you for employer‑facing roles in retail, hospitality, manufacturing, the public sector and third‑sector organisations.

The foundation degree is also designed to allow progression to a top‑up year to obtain a full honours degree (for example a BA/BSc in Business Management or a related subject), which further expands career and professional development opportunities, including management roles and specialist functions.
