What you'll study

This programme focuses on contemporary practice in early childhood and child care, combining theory with applied skills you can use directly in settings such as nurseries, preschools and family support services. Modules typically cover child development from birth to five years, curriculum planning and play-based learning, observation and assessment techniques, safeguarding and child protection, and health, safety and nutrition for young children.

• Health, safety and nutrition: creating safe environments, basic first aid awareness for young children, and promoting healthy eating.
• Inclusion and additional needs: supporting children with special educational needs and working with families and allied professionals.
• Placement or practicum: supervised practical experience in an early years setting to develop classroom and care skills (where available).

Entry requirements

Applicants usually need a first degree or equivalent qualification in any discipline, or a recognised diploma plus relevant work experience in childcare or related services. Applicants without formal tertiary qualifications but with substantial practical experience in early years settings may be considered. You will normally be required to provide a CV, academic transcripts or evidence of prior learning, and referees who can speak to your suitability to work with children.

Successful applicants must meet safeguarding and fitness-to-practice checks before starting any placement; this commonly includes a criminal background check and evidence of required immunisations. English language proficiency requirements apply for applicants whose prior study was not conducted in English.

Graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Child Care are prepared for roles in a variety of early years and child-focused settings. Typical entry-level and progression roles include:
