What you'll study

The programme combines coursework and supervised field experience to build specialist competence in special education across preschool, elementary, middle and secondary settings. Typical topics include:

• Foundations of Special Education — legal and ethical frameworks, history of disability services and disability rights.
• Assessment and Individualised Programmes (IEPs) — formal and informal assessment strategies, data-driven goal setting, progress monitoring and developing compliant, functional IEPs.
• Instructional Strategies and Differentiation — universal design for learning, curriculum adaptation, scaffolding and co-teaching models for inclusive classrooms.
• Behavioural Interventions and Positive Supports — functional behaviour assessment, behaviour intervention planning and classroom management for learners with challenging behaviour.
• Assistive Technology and Communication — low- and high-tech supports, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) approaches and technology integration to support access and participation.
• Transition Planning and Life Skills — post-school transition, vocational planning, community-based instruction and supports for independent living.
• Practicum / Field Experience — supervised placements in inclusive and specialised settings, mentor support and application of coursework to real classroom contexts.

Courses are delivered through a mix of seminars, case-based learning and practicum supervision. Students develop a professional portfolio demonstrating competency in assessment, IEP development and instructional planning.

Entry requirements

Applicants typically need a recognised undergraduate degree and a state-issued teaching certificate or equivalent professional teaching credential. Candidates without a teaching certificate but with a related graduate degree and relevant experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Common application materials include official transcripts, a current résumé, professional references, a statement of purpose outlining interest in special education, and documentation of prior teaching experience. Candidates must also meet any statutory background check, health screening or clearance requirements used for school placements.
