What you'll study

This diploma combines child development theory with hands-on practice. You will study typical and atypical development across physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains, and explore the role of play, observation and assessment in supporting children's learning.

• Foundations of child development: developmental milestones from birth to five years, attachment theory and influences on development.
• Health, safety and safeguarding: safeguarding policy, first aid awareness, nutrition, hygiene and creating safe environments.
• Observation and assessment: recording techniques, using observation to plan activities and track progress.
• Inclusive practice and SEND support: adapting practice for additional needs, working with families and external agencies.
• Play and early learning: planning play-based activities, curriculum approaches for early years and transitions to school.
• Professional practice: communication with parents and colleagues, reflective practice, ethics and professional responsibilities.

Learning is delivered through classroom sessions, practical workshops in purpose-built childcare facilities and supervised placements in early years settings. Assessment typically combines written assignments, practical observations and a professional portfolio.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a standard level of secondary education and demonstrate an interest in working with children. Typical entry criteria include:

• English and maths at GCSE grade 4/C or equivalent, or evidence of functional skills at an appropriate level.
• A previous Level 1 or Level 2 qualification in childcare or related experience is advantageous but not always required; applicants without formal qualifications may be considered based on experience and interview.
• Satisfactory references and an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check where required by placement providers.
• Successful completion of an interview and, where relevant, a short practical task to assess suitability for working with children.

Career prospects

Graduates of this diploma are prepared for a range of entry-level roles in early years and childcare, including:

• Early years practitioner or nursery assistant
• Playworker or out-of-school club assistant
• Support roles in child-focused community services
• Special educational needs support assistant (with additional training)

Many students use the diploma as a stepping stone to Level 3 qualifications, apprenticeships, foundation degrees or teacher training routes such as Early Years Teacher or primary education. The programme develops a professional portfolio and practical experience valued by employers in the sector.
