What you'll study

This diploma balances practical studio work with contextual studies and professional practice. You will undertake project-led modules that encourage experimentation across traditional and contemporary media, and build a coherent body of work.

• Foundation skills: observational drawing, colour and composition, materials and mark-making.
• Fine art media: painting, printmaking and sculpture techniques, including mixed media approaches.
• Digital arts: digital imaging, basic animation, image manipulation and using software for creative outputs.
• Photography and lens-based practices: analogue and digital capture, darkroom or digital workflow and image editing.
• Contextual studies: art history, contemporary art theory, critical reflection and research methods.
• Professional practice and portfolio development: preparing a progression or employment portfolio, exhibiting work, presenting proposals and basic business skills for creatives.
• Work-based learning: short placements, collaborative projects with community or industry partners, and live briefs when available.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a relevant Level 2 qualification or equivalent experience. Typical entry might include a set number of GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, often including English, or a vocational Level 2 award in art and design. Mature applicants without formal qualifications are considered on the strength of a portfolio and interview. You will normally be asked to submit a small portfolio of recent work and attend an interview or audition so tutors can assess your suitability and motivation for the course.

Career prospects

Graduates of the diploma move into a range of creative and support roles or continue their studies. Common next steps include progression to undergraduate art and design degrees, higher national diplomas or foundation degrees. Employment outcomes include gallery and museum support roles, studio assistant, community arts facilitator, junior technician, freelance maker or self-employed creative. The course also provides practical skills useful for related sectors such as creative media, illustration, set design and craft-based enterprises.
