Programme overview

This is a low‑residency specialization offered over three academic years totaling 29 credits. Coursework combines intensive one‑week experiential residencies (held twice yearly in June and September) with online coursework that follows fall courses to bridge learning into the next year. The curriculum is designed to meet the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) Alternate Route training requirements.

What you'll study

The program focuses on dance/movement therapy as a mind–body therapeutic modality, teaching treatment approaches and intervention techniques through highly experiential classroom work and hands‑on clinical practice. Students complete DMT‑specific courses and integrative projects to build a theoretical framework and applied skills. Clinical applications covered include individual and group interventions across the developmental spectrum.

Entry requirements

• Complete the online admissions application with short answer questions and a resume/CV.
• Pay a non‑refundable $50 application fee.
• Submit official transcripts from all post‑secondary institutions.
• One letter of recommendation is requested from someone able to evaluate your professional or academic work.
• Interview with a department faculty member if selected (in person, by phone, or via Skype).
• Additional requirements apply for international applicants and for applicants without a bachelor’s degree.
• GRE or other standardized tests are not required for master’s or certificate programs.

Career prospects

Graduates prepare to work as dance/movement therapy practitioners in clinical, community, and educational settings. DMT interventions in the curriculum target a wide range of client needs, including depression, trauma, anxiety, relationship and social/emotional learning concerns, eating disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and other medical conditions, immune disorders, and traumatic brain injury. Students who intend to pursue the R‑DMT credential must complete 700 hours of DMT internship; supervision and internship development resources are provided beginning in the program’s second year.
