What you'll study

The course places importance on pedagogical skills, content mastery for the intended certification area and mathematics competency for elementary candidates. Specific academic expectations include preparation for the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) subject exams and completion of mathematics requirements or refresher work if needed to meet the programme's basic-proficiency expectations.

Entry requirements

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
• Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Cover letter describing career goals, prior experience working with children or youth, and any existing or potential school sponsorships.
• Official, sealed transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
• Current professional resume.
• Two professional references from individuals currently employed in a K–12 setting.
• A 2–3 minute recorded teaching demonstration video (any topic or audience).
• At least 100 hours of prior experience working with students in the target age group.
• Evidence of basic proficiency in mathematics, English, reading and writing as determined by transcript review.
• Full national background check including the national sex offender registry.
• Elementary candidates: must achieve at least 80% on the AME Test of Basic Math prior to the start of the programme; those scoring below 80% may take an undergraduate math course, complete a non-credit refresher, or study independently and retake the test before the programme begins.
• Secondary candidates: required to take the MTTC test for their desired subject area by August 15, 2025, to demonstrate content knowledge.
• All candidates must achieve passing scores on relevant MTTC subject-area examinations before the college can recommend them for certification.
• M.Ed. degree requirements must be completed within five years of enrollment in the first graduate education course.
• Application rounds: Round 1: April 15; Round 2: May 1. Prospective applicants may schedule an advising appointment as part of the process.

Graduates who complete programme requirements and pass the required MTTC exams are positioned to pursue K–12 teaching certification in Michigan. Career outcomes depend on the certification level and subject area candidates select and on meeting state certification standards.
