An accelerated 4+1 pathway between Aquinas College and Western Michigan University that lets Aquinas students apply undergraduate work toward a WMU MA in History. Suited to undergraduates at Aquinas who have completed advanced history coursework or research and who want to shorten the time to a graduate degree while preserving research-focused preparation.

What you'll study

Transferable AQ courses and advanced deliverables must feature substantial research using primary sources. Courses and experiences identified for transfer or PLA credit include:

  • History 202 Colonial and Revolutionary America
  • History 204 After Revolution: Early American Republic
  • History 206 Civil War and Reconstruction
  • History 210 Gilded Age and Progressive Era
  • History 302 History of Britain (4 credit hours)
  • History 310 Variable Topics on History of War
  • History 400 Senior Research Seminar (a second distinct History 400 topic may also be counted)
  • Other advanced-level history coursework, internships, or research experiences that produce appropriate final deliverables

History 300 Historiography can be considered for prior learning assessment only if it requires a research paper using primary sources. Note that History 300 does not replace WMU's History 6010 requirement for the WMU MA in History; WMU Department of History faculty set the criteria for PLA evaluation and credit awards.

Entry requirements

AQ students seeking to use this pathway must achieve a grade of B or better in AQ courses to be eligible for direct transfer credit to WMU. Admission into the WMU MA component under the 4+1 provides a WMU application fee and GRE waiver; however, students who later apply for funding as full-time MA students after completing the 4+1 will need to submit GRE scores to WMU.

Career prospects

The programme emphasizes research with primary sources and advanced-level history work, preparing students for graduate-level historical scholarship, archival or research-based roles, museum or public history positions, and further academic study. Specific career outcomes depend on subsequent WMU MA completion and the student’s individual focus and experience.

Scholarships & funding angle

Applicants to the 4+1 receive a WMU application fee waiver and an initial GRE waiver for admissions purposes. For consideration for full-time MA funding after finishing the 4+1, WMU requires GRE scores. Other funding details and scholarships are handled by WMU and are not specified in the Aquinas source text.
