What you'll study

Coursework alternates between specialization and research-focused classes and finishes with dissertation research. Foundational and sample course topics listed in program materials include:

• Foundations of advanced graduate study, academic integrity, and student success resources (first-course writing assessment administered in TIM8101)
• Academic and scholarly writing, conceptual and theoretical frameworks, and literature synthesis
• Advanced instructional design practices, development of instructional materials and multimedia learning assets, and consideration of legal, ethical, and political influences on design
• Introduction to research paradigms and the theoretical and practical foundations of qualitative and quantitative methodologies, including ethics, data collection and analysis techniques, validity, reliability, trustworthiness, generalizability/transferability, and rigor
• Specialization coursework drawn from options such as Early Childhood Education; English Language Learning; General Education; International Education & Globalization; Leadership in Higher Education; Leadership in Curriculum and Teaching; School Safety, Security, and Emergency Management; Social Emotional Learning; Special Education; Trauma-Informed Educational Practices; and Leadership in Coaching and Sport Management
• Dissertation sequence with longer (12-week) research courses culminating in original research that contributes to the body of knowledge in education

Entry requirements

The program description specifies a $0 application fee and no essays or exams required for application. NU may accept up to 12 semester credit hours in transfer from accredited doctoral coursework completed with a grade of B or better; students who completed NU's EdS may be eligible to apply up to 30 credits toward the doctoral programs subject to School Dean approval. The program may require additional credit hours beyond the 60-credit minimum if needed to complete dissertation research in accordance with Satisfactory Academic Progress and Academic Maximum Time Frame policies.

Career prospects

The PhD-Ed is intended primarily for candidates who wish to teach in higher education and/or conduct educational research. Graduates are prepared for roles as full-time faculty with teaching and research responsibilities, institutional researchers, or other positions focused on producing and contributing to educational research.
