What you'll study

The curriculum is transdisciplinary and integrates scholarship with practice. Students take shared seminars within the doctoral learning community and pursue individualized study in the Environmental and Sustainability Education specialization. Research and inquiry topics identified in the program include:

• Large-scale ecocrises such as climate destabilization, mass extinction, and food and water system insecurities
• Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge and place-based environmental literacies
• Designing Sustainability Across the Curriculum and transdisciplinary environmental education in formal settings
• Organizational practices, corporate social responsibility, and how institutional procedures affect sustainability
• Evaluation and design of grassroots environmental education campaigns and organizational learning to align practice with justice goals

Students may combine seminars and individualized study, take courses in other Antioch programs, and transfer eligible graduate credits. Each student’s dissertation topic is situated in their chosen specialization.

Entry requirements

The program is designed for working adults and assumes professional experience in educational or related practice. Classes are offered online with a required annual in-person residency. New cohorts enter in the summer term; a typical full-time pacing of two courses per term allows completion in about three years. Specific admissions procedures and formal entry criteria are provided through Antioch University’s admissions resources.

Graduates are positioned as scholar-practitioners who apply practitioner-based research to problems in schools, community organizations, corporate settings, environmental NGOs, and activist groups. Typical roles include leadership positions that require program design, curriculum leadership for sustainability initiatives, organizational change agents focusing on corporate social responsibility, and researchers who translate practice into evidence-based interventions for social and environmental justice.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Antioch offers the President’s Doctoral Fellowship to entering doctoral students; the award is $12,000 (distributed equally over the first two registered years), and is awarded based on prior academic performance and work/life experience. The fellowship specifies a minimum 3.40 GPA for consideration and requires full-time enrollment with continued satisfactory academic progress and completion of courses to retain the award.
