Programme overview

Andrews University offers a suite of graduate credentials in Higher Education Administration (MA, EdS, EdD, PhD). The MA prepares students for entry-level and mid-management student affairs positions; the EdS targets mid-level administrators seeking advanced training; the EdD and PhD prepare experienced practitioners for senior administrative and policy-making roles. Doctoral candidates must submit a research-based article to a peer-reviewed publication and complete a dissertation. The program follows the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) principles and includes a curriculum emphasis on the globalization of higher education, with an international study tour of universities abroad.

What you'll study

Coursework varies by credential level. The MA is a 36-credit program typically completed in two years full-time. The EdS requires 45 credits and is typically a four-year full-time program. The EdD is a 60-credit program and the PhD 61 credits, each typically completed in five years full-time. Across levels, studies focus on student affairs administration, higher education management, and international perspectives on higher education; doctoral study adds substantial research and dissertation components, plus the requirement to submit a research-based article to a peer-reviewed journal.

Entry requirements

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis for fall, spring and summer. MA applicants need a bachelor's degree (or non-U.S. equivalent) from an accredited institution and a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.60 (applicants with lower GPA may be considered based on the composite profile). Doctoral applicants (EdS, EdD, PhD) require a master’s degree (or non-U.S. equivalent) and a minimum graduate GPA of 3.30 (exceptions possible based on composite profile).

• Recommendations: two for the MA; three for EdS, EdD and PhD (recommenders can be advisors, major professors or employers).
• Resume detailing employment, research or projects.
• Statement of Purpose describing philosophical perspective, goals, and reasons for pursuing the program.
• English proficiency test (TOEFL, IELTS or PTE Academic) required for students whose language of education is not English.

The MA targets entry-level or mid-management student affairs positions at public and private colleges, universities and community colleges. The EdS prepares mid-level administrators for advancement in post-secondary institutions. EdD and PhD graduates are prepared for senior administrative and policy-making positions in higher education, leveraging research and dissertation work to inform institutional leadership.
