What you'll study

Students complete the BLS general curriculum core, select a concentration and satisfy a prescribed number of general elective credits. The general core emphasizes academic skills, critical thinking and public speaking while allowing coursework beyond the chosen concentration to ensure a broad liberal-arts experience.

  • Available concentrations: Humanities, Social Science, Applied Arts, Community Wellness, Instructional Support, Public Information, Community Safety.
  • Transfer courses can be applied to the general core, concentration and electives.
  • Students may test out of some requirements or apply for credit for work experience; CLEP and DANTES testing programs and certain military training may also earn credit.

Entry requirements

New applicants should apply online or contact UT admissions. Current University of Tampa students wishing to change to the BLS degree should speak with their academic advisor. The programme accepts many previously earned college credits; students can pursue prior learning credit where eligible.

Career prospects

The degree is commonly chosen for career advancement or transitions. Depending on concentration, graduates have pathways into roles such as educational support positions, communication specialist roles in public or nonprofit agencies, community health support roles, or positions within public safety agencies. The Humanities and Social Science concentrations are intended to prepare graduates for employment across a range of industries.
