Suited to those aiming to become licensed clinicians or to pursue doctoral study, it emphasizes applied skills through supervised practicum and internship placements.
The curriculum centers on clinical practice and the study and treatment of human problems to enhance functioning and potential. Core graduate-level instruction covers counseling theory, counseling interventions, assessment and diagnosis, research and program evaluation, and culturally informed, social-justice oriented ethical practice. Students complete a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship; a master's thesis is not required. An optional child and adolescent concentration requires specific electives plus three additional credit hours. Practicum and internship sites number more than 60 affiliated agencies where students refine therapy, intervention, consultation, assessment and diagnosis skills.
On successful completion of the program students are eligible for endorsement for examination as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate in Indiana, positioning graduates to enter clinical roles under supervision and to pursue full licensure. The degree also prepares students who wish to continue to doctoral study. Clinical placements and the program's focus on assessment, diagnosis and intervention aim to ready graduates for a range of counseling settings.
