Programme overview

Indian River State College offers Emergency Medical Services training that includes an Associate in Science degree in Emergency Medical Services plus technical certificates for Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic. The associate degree integrates general education with the 53 credits specified by Florida statutes and administrative code to satisfy the National EMS Education Standards. The EMT and Paramedic tracks are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon recommendation by CoAEMSP. Graduates are eligible to sit for the National Registry certification exams in Florida.

What you'll study

The curriculum covers entry-level EMT skills through advanced life support interventions for paramedics. Instruction includes classroom theory, clinical experiences and supervised field experience. The associate degree combines general education coursework with the EMS-specific credit hours required by state and national standards. The paramedic program focuses on assessment of complex emergencies, treatment prioritization, administration of advanced interventions, patient stabilization and transport.

Entry requirements

Requirements vary by certificate, with detailed EMT admissions listed in the EMT Application Book. Key EMT conditions include:

• Must be 18 years or older and a U.S. citizen
• High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
• Complete fingerprinting and a Level 2 background check; submit FBI/FDLE inquiry and drug screen via American Data Bank’s Complio
• Complete a physical examination and immunization form (IRSC 515A)
• Must have been released/discharged from the military honorably, if applicable
• No convictions for felony, perjury, false statement, domestic violence, or misdemeanors involving moral turpitude
• Must pass medical and hearing exams and be able to perform vigorous physical activity without restrictions
• Possess a valid Florida driver’s license (subject to disqualification for certain driving histories)
• Must be drug-free and never have been in or associated with criminal gang activity as defined by FSS 874.03

The EMT admissions process includes an application to IRSC and attendance at a mandatory orientation (example: June 16, 2026, at 9:00 am, Treasure Coast Public Safety Training Complex).

Career prospects

EMT graduates are prepared for entry-level positions in emergency medical services, public safety communications and ambulance operations. Paramedic graduates provide advanced life support and are trained to assess complex emergencies, prioritize care, perform advanced interventions and support patient stabilization and transport. Note that employability and clinical placement may be affected by illicit drug use, background check findings, convictions or immunization status.
