Coursework focuses on core prehospital care and EMS system knowledge. Key topics and courses named in the programme include:

• ESEC 1140 (Emergency Medical Technician Basic) — entry-level cognitive and kinesthetic skills such as medical and trauma assessment, basic pharmacology, and EMS operations; prepares students to sit for EMT‑Basic certification through the Utah Bureau of EMS.
• ESFF 1000 — a listed core course that counts toward the A.A.S. pathway.

The Online-Plus format may include online classes, live video sessions, and required field or clinical experiences; some livestreamed sessions can have fixed times and there are occasional on-campus activities.

Entry requirements

The programme requires in-person attendance for ESEC 1140 because of its hands-on training; UVU notes EMT/AEMT classes meet in person three days per week with some online coursework. Students already holding EMT certification or with relevant experience can pursue Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) to potentially reduce required coursework; contact an Academic Advisor or the CPL office to assess eligibility.

UVU offers Credit for Prior Learning to reduce time and cost by awarding credit for relevant work, training, or prior education after assessment. For tuition context, fully online undergraduate students residing outside Utah pay a flat rate of $285 per credit (U.S. residents); in-state fully online students pay the same rates as on-campus students as determined by residency.
