An undergraduate minor that gives non-chemistry majors a structured foundation in general, analytical, organic and physical chemistry. Best suited to students wanting substantive laboratory and lecture chemistry preparation to complement majors in biology, engineering, materials or related fields.

What you'll study

The required sequence covers core areas and laboratories plus an upper-division elective component. Required courses and laboratories are:

  • General Chemistry: CHM 1210 (General Chemistry I) and CHM 1210L (General Chemistry I Laboratory) — 3 + 1 units
  • General Chemistry II: CHM 1220 (General Chemistry II) and CHM 1220L (General Chemistry II Laboratory) — 3 + 1 units
  • Analytical Chemistry: CHM 2210 (Quantitative Analysis) and CHM 2210L (Quantitative Analysis Laboratory) — 2 + 2 units
  • Organic Chemistry: choose either CHM 2010 (Elements of Organic Chemistry) with CHM 2010L (laboratory) or CHM 3140 (Organic Chemistry I) with CHM 3140L (laboratory); taking CHM 2010 route yields a 25-unit minor, taking CHM 3140 yields a 26-unit minor
  • Physical Chemistry: choose one of CHM 3010 (Modeling the Fundamentals of Physical Chemistry — GE B5), CHM 3040 (Elements of Physical Chemistry) or CHM 3110 (Classical Physical Chemistry)
  • Upper-division chemistry electives: select any CHM courses at the 3000–4000 level (excluding CHM 3140/3140L) totaling 6 units
