Programme overview

The Teacher Librarian Program at Fresno Pacific University leads to a Master of Arts in Education with an emphasis in School Library and Information Technology. The fully online curriculum is designed to prepare teacher librarians (also called school librarians, library media teachers, or library media specialists) to collaborate with classroom teachers, manage learning resources in all formats, and instruct students and staff in evaluating and using information. The MA builds on credential coursework and culminates in a written thesis focused on original research related to the school library program. The program is accredited by the California Commission on Teaching Credentialing (CCTC) and WASC.

What you'll study

The MA requires a minimum of 37 semester units. Coursework emphasizes collaboration, instructional practice, and the use of educational technology within school library programs. Candidates are guided through development of a research thesis tied to school library practice. Program learning areas include:

• Leadership and Advocacy: articulating and advocating for effective school library programs that support student learning and achievement.
• Program Administration: planning, budgeting for, implementing, and assessing school library programs.
• Diversity and Equity: instructing and supporting diverse learners in the librarian role.
• Information and Digital Literacy: treating information and digital literacy as academic content areas.

Entry requirements

Admission is based on review of academic record, work experience, and a statement of intent. Applicants must submit a completed application, official transcripts showing a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution (a final transcript is required before enrollment), and one reference attesting to professional and academic qualifications. If the undergraduate cumulative GPA is below 3.0 (4.0 scale), a letter of explanation is required. Candidates also submit a written statement of intent and will be scheduled for a program interview after materials are received. A valid California teaching credential is required for admission.

Graduates are prepared to serve as teacher librarians/library media specialists or library media teachers in K–12 schools. Trained to be instructional leaders and information/technology specialists, alumni typically take roles that combine classroom collaboration, collection management (physical and digital), information-literacy instruction, and advocacy for school library programs.
