Programme overview

The IPF at Zurich University of the Arts offers a PhD pathway in Performing Arts and Film through formal cooperation with four partner institutions: University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, KONRAD WOLF Film University of Babelsberg, University of Arts Linz and Stockholm University of the Arts. ZHdK itself does not award doctorates; doctoral degrees are conferred by the partner university relevant to the candidate’s focus. Research supervision and activities take place partly in Zurich and largely at the respective partner institution.

What you'll study

Research projects centre on performative and/or cinematic processes across film, dance, theatre, performance and transdisciplinary arts. The programme supports artistic and artistic‑scientific practice-led research. Candidates participate in peer-to-peer exchange within ZHdK’s wider research community and attend supervision, events and coursework as determined by the partner university.

Entry requirements

• Master’s degree or equivalent in an artistic or art-theoretical discipline.
• Several years of substantial artistic practice.
• Willingness to take part in activities in Zurich and at the partner university; residence in Switzerland is not required.
• Interest in transdisciplinary peer exchange across artistic fields.
• Applicants linked to Graz must be prepared to attend on-site courses and lectures and either have German at B2 level or be willing to acquire it mid-term.

Career prospects

Graduates pursue doctoral-level careers that combine advanced artistic practice and research, such as university or art-school teaching, research-led artistic projects, curatorial and dramaturgical roles, or leadership positions in film and performing-arts organisations—depending on the degree track and the partner university’s profile.
