See the degree grade →A senior capstone course for Management majors, Public Management Consulting (PMC) has student teams tackle real-world projects within the Coast Guard and the public sector. It suits final-year management cadets who want hands-on experience translating classroom knowledge into practical analysis, proposals and client-facing deliverables.
Teams scope a client problem, conduct research and data-driven analysis, develop a solution, and design steps for implementation. Deliverables include a comprehensive written report and a client presentation. Recent capstone topics have included optimizing the Coast Guard Recruiting Command’s footprint; reimagining contingency planning and resource management; aggregating procurement and warehousing to improve mission support; improving personnel staffing models; analysing and optimising operations at the Academy clinic; and examining Coast Guard retention.
Cadets have travelled in support of projects to locations such as Coast Guard Headquarters and Department of Homeland Security Headquarters in Washington, D.C.; Coast Guard Surface Forces Logistics Center (Baltimore); Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach; and Coast Guard Base Boston.
Enrollment is available to all first-class (senior) cadets who are Management majors; it functions as the departmental senior capstone.
The capstone consolidates four years of study into applied consulting experience for public-sector and Coast Guard employers. Outcomes are oriented toward roles that require problem framing, analysis, implementation planning and client communication within military, public administration or operational support settings.
